The Bihar state women's commission has asked Bollywood playback singer Udit Narayan and his alleged first wife Ranjana to depose before it by Wednesday to clarify their move for a compromise.

"The commission asked them to appear before it by July 5 to make their compromise talks known to us," said commission chairperson Manju Prakash Saturday.

On Friday, Udit Narayan held closed-door talks with Ranjana Narayan, who claims to be his first wife.

"Udit has to appear personally by July 5 or we have to take action against him," Manju Prakash told here.

Udit Narayan, who failed to appear before the commission despite being summoned five times, has expressed his willingness through his lawyer to settle the dispute amicably within a week.

Udit Narayan arrived here Friday for discussions with Ranjana. "Both held hours-long compromise talks," an official said on conditions of anonymity.

Ranjana, a resident of Nirmali village in Supaul district, has claimed that she is the singer's first wife. According to her, they married in 1984 and his second wife Deepa Narayan was not his legal wife.

Ranjana had approached the state women's commission, which asked the singer to depose before it.

Udit Narayan had earlier denied Ranjana's claim. He told reporters that he did not know "any Ranjana Narayan" and had never married her, adding that this was a "conspiracy to defame him".
